Hey everybody, it’s Nick — the guy behind Rantingly.
After nearly 8 years of duct tape, I finally gave the site a long-overdue upgrade.
Rantingly 1.0 was operating on a very outdated theme that was causing the site to run poorly. When I launched this thing back in August 2017, I didn’t know what I was doing. I was basically freewheeling my way through web design with a prayer and a pile of plugins. Lots of patches and temporary fixes along the way to make the site run adequate enough to make you think I knew what I was doing.
Well here is Rantingly 2.0…
First of all, let’s get this out of they way real quick, I don’t care where you live. If you click on the green cloud button it will take you down to the accordion menu at the bottom of the page with the current weather forecast. The only reason the site asks you where you live is so that the map can give you your local weather. So when that pop-up comes up and asks you about your location click yes if you think you might be pressing that cloud button occasionally, click no and you can just see the weather I’m enjoying here in Southern California, because that is the default setting.
Second of all, apologies for Rantingly not being updated as often as I would like over the past month or so. I have put in a ton of hours recently getting this new site out. But now that Rantingly 2.0 is alive and mostly not on fire, I’ll be focusing daily on keeping the front page sharp and current.
There’s a menu at the top of the screen now. Sorry or you’re welcome. You’ll quickly figure out what all the buttons do. In Rantingly 2.1, you’ll be able to hide the menu entirely if you hate it. I am going to force you to look at it for a couple of weeks because I want to get a gauge of how/if people are using it.
I built out a sports section and an outdoors page. 99% of my time and focus will be on keeping the frontpage updated on a daily basis. Those new sections are setup so I don’t have to put a lot of time into updating them. When I’m firing on all cylinders, I can usually put up around 70 pieces of content a day on the frontpage between the articles and tweets. The purpose of the new sections is to expand my ability to offer fresh content. I’ll be posting some blogs over there as well. Was it a colossal waste of time building those sections out? Only time will tell. If you like them, I’ll keep improving them. If not, they’ll just hang out quietly like forgotten gym equipment. If those turn out to be sections that people use regularly, I can eventually build out full sections for finance/crypto, weather – or like powerwashing and lawn leveling videos, whatever you guys are into. The sports and outdoors sections don’t look how I want them to on mobile yet; that’s something I’ll put some time in to eventually.
That little gear button allows you to adjust the look of the site to suit your taste and eye sight. Personally, I think the front page looks best with a 80% zoom and larger font.
Maybe you’ve noticed the comment bubbles next to some of the headlines on the front page. I have the option to create a comment page for each article I post now. It’s my attempt to keep the flow and look of the site the same while also allowing for some ranting. I’ll probably post a few comment sections per day on news stories that may inspire some intriguing discussions. I’ll also be posting more videos as featured articles on the front page that will allow more of an opportunity for engagement. You can sign in via Google or WordPress for now. More comment login options coming soon.
That’s it for now. If something’s broken, confusing, or you just want to say hi — shoot me a message. Appreciate you all. Really.
Love you guys.
— Nick
